Auburn began building boattial speedsters in the early 1930s, and the 851 was introduced for the 1935 model year with updated styling by Gordon Buerhig. Built for only two years before Auburn production was terminated at the end of 1936, the model featured pontoon fenders, a raked V-shape windscreen, and tapered “boattail” rear bodywork.

One of only about 75 Speedster models Auburn built in 1932, the car has been certified as Category One by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, as it has an original 8-100A chassis, engine, transmission, axles, body, and all other major components.

Technical: This 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster is powered by an in-line Lycoming eight-cylinder engine with 279.9 cubic-inch displacement. Fitted with a supercharger, it produces 150 horsepower. The wheelbase measures 127 inches. Priced at $2,245 new, the 851 Speedster was Auburn's most expensive 1935 model.

Extremely original preservation level unrestored Supercharged Speedster. Stored from 1961-2013. Thorough yet sympathetic mechanical restoration performed by Auburn specialist, Howard Lane, overseen by Pre-War preservation expert Evan Ide in 2014.

I purchased the 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster Replica from a guy in California November 1994. He bought the replica kit from California Custom Coach. In the mid 80's. At the purchase time, he visited the company and spent a week there learning how to assemble the replica kit as they did.

The Speedster was given much more voluptuous lines, courtesy of Gordon Buehrig, who would later on style the equally snazzy Cord 810/812. The 1935 Auburn styling was the work of Gordon Buehrig, who had designed the immortal Model J Duesenberg. Making the 1934 theme more upright, yet more graceful, Buehrig also lowered the speedster’s tail, making it smoother and more aerodynamic.
